Built-In advantages Minimize

Time to go-live measured in hours or days.

Asperto.Net services provide a DotnetNuke Portal Website almost immediately.  From the initial foundation, users can self-register, or user accounts can be generated in an upload from Excel or Access or other database systems.  Your organisation is then in place on-line for reading managed content or receiving role-targeted emails - address-merged from the database.

Core code is built-in and stable.

There is no need to wait while designers and developers create databases, Authentication and Authorisation schemes and content management facilities.  It's all available ready-built on installation.

The portal and the sites in it are individually configurable

On top of the foundation, the colour schemes, look and feel, graphic design typographical design can all be applied in a replaceable skin.

Standard and Custom business modules

The page-design masters are laid out in the skin templates.  These define 'panes' into which 'business modules' drop-in.  These modules are available straight out of the box or supplied in consultation with Asperto.Net.  They can be pre-written 3rd party modules, or can be specially written by Asperto.Net or its associates.

Realism and perspective

Scale of a dynamic website with membership and content management.

The DotnetNuke Opensource Portal Framework took hundreds of thousands of man-hours to create and develop.  There is an internationally distributed team of workers that develop the core code.  It would be completely unrealistic to expect any company to attempt to start from scratch and re-invent this framework.  Even if it was possible - it would take a long time.  Do you have a long time?

Management Brief Overview What? When? Where? Why? Who? Minimize

What is an Asperto.Net dynamic website? Briefly, it is a website based on DNN that allows people in different roles to work together. It can be used by 1-person sole-traders, small to medium-sized organisations or large organisations.

What is DNN?

Dotnetnuke (DNN) The Leading Framework for Web Content Management and Application Development on Microsoft .NET.  It is the most widely adopted open source framework for building websites and web applications on Microsoft's ASP.NET.  There have been over 600,000 downloads of the system.

Developing this answer : It's a very robust, powerful, extensible and reliable server-based website portal Membership and Content Management System.  It is built on the latest .Net and SQL Server technology.  It is capable of doing Web2.0, the new generation of interactive websites that operate as virtual offices on remote webservers, so you don't need network software applications or design studios - it's all done on-line. (A Dynamic website displays a freshly made-up page on every request.  Every piece of text is suplied from the backing database, and this, together with page-template, stylesheets and images are merged to render the displayed page.  Dynamic pages can display in a different way, with different content - depending on who is viewing.)

When? It can be installed by Asperto.Net within 1 day.  It can be doing business immediately.

Where? It is installed on your customer account on an Asperto.net hosted webspace, physically in a multiply redundant fully backed-up server-farm in virtual servers.

Why? If your organisation is to become larger you would normally become staff-limited and require more staff to support the administration overhead.  If every customer is given their own account that they administer, the organisation limits are removed. OR If your organisation needs to have its own systems (Rather than Googlemail Facebook etc) with its own branding.  Productivity and efficiency benefits are easily measured.

Advantages: Putting the business power in the hands of Front-Office and managers - not Design/ Developers

  • Location-independent publishing and administration. (So No reliance on private copies of the system on the developer's machine).
  • Dynamic Content.  Each page view is presented to the user freshly generated by the database feeding the display engine.
  • Multiple simultaneous use by any number of distributed administrators, all working in different roles.
  • Very easy page navigation control.  Whereas simple HTML websites are very inflexible as the navigation menus and content are tightly coupled, ASperto.Net DNN sites are manageable by configurable settings and no need to interact with scripts or code is required.
  • Very easy content editing and content management.  This is done over the web-browser so no investment in costly designer software is required.

Who? DNN systems are being used successfully by the smallest to the largest organisation.  The scope is: alll the people in an organisation, its suppliers, vendors and customers.  All the staff in all their roles.  City/Local Governments, Federal/international organisations, and companies that manage product branding, Banks.

What it does is place the control of the website administration and management in the front-office and removes the need to go to the back-office developer to change the content.  Logging-in provides authentication and that allows the site to automatically recognise the individual user, and provide that user with content that is in line with their stated profile preferences.

What's cool about it?  It's Opensource Microsoft Industry-strength technology.  But it can be run by a single person - or many.  Large organisations use in-house proprietary systems that are similar in scope to DNN but they require a department of staff to maintain the code.  Not so with DNN opensource.  There is a worldwide DNN team looking after the core code, and your organisation doesn't even have to 'raise the bonnet-lid'.

What you pay for is Asperto.Net value-added setup and hosting and consultancy-support.  Asperto.Net handles all the core upgrades, backups and monitoring.  You don't pay for the Opensource Core code (It would cost £milions), but you do pay for the 3rd-party business modules that plug-in to it.

Disadvantages? Users depend on having a reliable high speed internet connection, and interruptions to the connection will stop their show. Also, because all the complexity is unseen, people may not see the value of the system until coached.

How much does it cost to set up? Initially typically £2,000+ VAT for an e-commerce system, but smaller systems can start at £550 + VAT.  Flexible pricing can allow lower setup costs and higher running cost to suit the capital budget. How much does it cost to run? About £100 + VAT per month, but the first 6 months are not charged.  Cost-Per-User in a typical system works out at pence-per-year.  This is a business system and it is capable of generating income.

Is it extensible? Yes.  This is the whole point.  Hundreds of 3rd-party Business modules are available as installable Private Assemblies at reasonable cost, usually on a Portal-wide licence.  So thousands of users can use the software on the same licence.

Do we get the Source Code? The DNN Source Code is available on a free Opensource licence.  (However, unless you are in the Worldwide Core Development team, you have no need to touch this core code).  Core upgrades happen all the time and this upgrading to your system is managed by Asperto.net processes.

Sensitivities? As the database engine contains the content and the design, obviously routine backups and management is now vital.  Asperto.Net looks after this, so it isn't a problem for you.

New ways of thinking?  Your organisation needs to know its purpose, its aims and the objectives on the road to a destination.  People need to know their roles and their responsibilities especially if they act in several roles, and how this maps on to the Organisation's interests.  Individuals need to have a value-cost concept for each business process.  (e.g. cost to register manually a member or client, send out a paper invoice, process cash or cheque etc). Business decisions could be made:- Manual service could be retained - but at higher price cost to the customer.
